Abuse. Discrimination. Inequality.
Words that can kill your very soul. Societies are plagued with these three simple words. Most of us just try to fit in with whatever society expects us to do. And sometimes, we even tend to hide from ourselves, conforming to its requirements. Remember Raven from the famous movie, X-Men? As she puts it, “No matter how bad the world gets, you don’t want to be against it. You want to be a part of it.”
But beyond the mask of society sprouted the LGBTs, meaning “lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender”. Who are these individuals?
Behind false shows
Every living citizen has rights, even though we live in a world full of violence. However, as the years pass, it’s tiring to continuously discriminate certain people like the LGBTs. It's like an old joke. You say it over and over, and in the end, people don't find it funny anymore. The LGBTs are still going to be there no matter how much the society hates them. And today, the government and people learned to accept and cherish these individuals. After all, they have been great contributors in the society itself. If they were hiding behind curtains before, they are now welcomed and respected today.
Curtain call
Over the years, the LGBT community prospered. They were given rights such as employment, housing and public accommodations, and the abolition of biased laws and regulations. Other personal issues like parenting, relationships and marriage have also been settled. In some countries like the United States, couples are able to access the benefits and responsibilities of legally recognized relationships, such as health insurance, unemployment compensation, inheritance and hospital visitation. These practically show that LGBTs are given not just equality, but also of utmost importance and attention.
They are not necessarily staging themselves for the world to see, but they are now part of the play that society directed.
Abuse. Discrimination. Inequality. Once upon a time, these words were killers of their very soul. But for the LGBTs, their realm is no longer awash with these murderers. Yesterday, they were judged by who they love, how they look like, and who they are. Today, they are enjoying their rights as if in a free fall. They fought. No matter how bad the world gets, they’re still there. Scenes came when they were against the world, but in the end, they certainly became a part of it.
